Metro has been deployed with wireless UTC integration for a major construction project in Manchester.
The Challenge
A major construction site in the heart of Manchester required temporary signalling under UTC control for long duration works.
The radio environment is challenging at the site with lots of construction walkie-talkies in use, a large crane and a major electrified train line very close to the master controller. There was also an portable traffic signal set just around the corner. A scan with the spectrum analyser confirmed the presence of three or four other devices, one of which had a very high signal strength. The client required a temporary signal that could stand up to this environment and provide the visibility required for such a location. Furthermore, hard-wired UTC connection was not possible with the capabilities of the roadside cabinet.
The Solution
Metro is a fully wireless, Temporary Traffic Signal system, that complies to TSRGD Diagram 3000. The signals height along with it’s high visibility design would provide the conspicuity required for such a site. Metro uses Active Channel Management (ACM) technology, which ensures reliable communication and would cope well in the congested environment.
Our patented wireless UTC system could be configured to allow Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to take control of the signals.
“The secure wireless UTC connection was set up in a matter of hours and tested remotely before being seamlessly implemented.”
– Darren Hudson, Senior Projects Manager
The Results
The customer was impressed with the solution, that arrived in transport stillages, relevant documentation and battery chargers. The secure wireless UTC connection was set up in a matter of hours and tested remotely before being seamlessly implemented.
Owing to the success of the scheme, Metro is now being selected for a number of high profile jobs at major construction sites and haul route crossings.
